Privacy Policy

Account details. When you sign in, our authentication provider, Clerk, handles your email and credentials directly — we never see or store a password. We keep a record tied to your account: your plan (Initiate or Starwarden), whether and when you purchased Starwarden, and an optional compass calibration number you can set yourself.

Location. Your browser’s location is read on your device to point the sky correctly and is used there directly. It reaches our servers in two different ways, and we treat them differently on purpose:

• For live sky data (planet positions, star charts, moon phase), your coordinates are rounded to about 11 km and your time to the nearest hour before they are used or cached — a precise fix on where you are standing is never transmitted or stored for this.
• If you choose to log a sighting in the Codex (a Starwarden feature), the exact coordinates at that moment are saved with that entry, because a record of where you stood is the point of the feature. This only happens when you take that action.

Sensors. Your phone’s compass and gyroscope are read continuously to orient the sky, entirely in your browser. That data is never sent to our servers at all, in any form.

Sighting logs. If you use the Codex, we store what you say you saw, when, and any note you choose to write.

Payment. Purchases are handled entirely by Stripe. We never see or store your card number. We keep a record that a purchase happened — a Stripe customer reference, the amount, and the date — so your unlock persists and so we can process refunds or disputes if they come up.

We don’t run advertising trackers, analytics pixels, or third-party marketing cookies of any kind — there are none in the app to opt out of. We don’t sell personal data, to anyone, ever. We don’t share your sighting logs, your precise location, or your account details with anyone except the service providers below, and only as needed to run the app.

• Clerk — authentication and account credentials.
• Supabase — the database that stores everything described above.
• Stripe — payment processing. Stripe is PCI-compliant; we never handle your raw card details.
• AstronomyAPI — generates star charts and moon-phase imagery for Starwarden features, and only ever receives the coarsened location described above.
• Vercel — hosts the app, and like any host, logs standard request metadata (such as IP address) as part of normal operation.

The only cookie of note is the one Clerk sets to keep you signed in. It’s functional, not a tracker, and it’s required for the app to know who you are between requests.

Deleting your account removes your profile, plan, calibration setting, and every sighting you’ve logged. Purchase records are kept afterward — this is deliberate, not an oversight: financial history has to survive account deletion for refunds, disputes, and accounting, and it carries nothing about you beyond that a purchase happened.

StarsInLight is not directed at, and is not knowingly used to collect data from, children under 13.

If what this page describes changes in a way that matters, we’ll update the date at the top and, for anything significant, say so plainly rather than bury it.
